7. RSV-Related community mortality
September 17th 2021, 17:00-18:00 CEST

Approximately 50% of RSV-related mortality occurs in the community; this webinar aims to provide clarity on the full burden associated with RSV in young infants. Natalie will discuss results from the newly published supplement in Clinical Infectious Diseases on “Community Mortality Burden Associated with Respiratory Syncytial in Low- and Middle-Income Countries”.  This webinar will include information on the importance and challenges of community mortality studies as well as results from study sites around the globe.
Hosted by prof. dr. Louis Bont and moderated and organized by: Sophie Mazur, Roxie van Lieshout and Leyla Kragten-Tabatabaie.

6. Airway smooth muscle dysfunction in RSV infection
June 30TH, 2021 - from 16:00 to 17:00 (CEST)

Dr. Giovanni Piedimonte's presentation will be based on his paper in Science Signaling (2021) about β2 adrenergic receptors (β2ARs) in airway smooth muscle cells. β2AR agonists do not seem to relieve acute airway obstruction in young RSV patients. In the paper, the effect of RSV infection on the abundance and function of β2ARs in paediatric lung tissue is examined. The results suggest that RSV infection counteracts β2AR agonist induced bronchodilation in multiple ways.

5. DETECTION OF DEFECTIVE VIRAL GENOMES AS A POTENTIAL TOOL TO PREDICT RESPIRATORY SYNCYTICAL VIRUS CLINICAL OUTCOME
May 27th, 2021

This webinar focused on the detection of defective viral genomes (DVGs). Understanding the kinetics of DVG accumulation and duration could predict clinical outcomes of RSV A infection in humans and thus, could be used as a prognostic tool to identify patients at risk of worse clinical disease. Through an interactive discussion and interview with prof. Carolina B. Lopez and co-host, dr. Ursula Buchholz, participants took lessons learned from these findings back to their own research.

Hosted by Prof. dr. Louis Bont and moderated and organized by: Sophie Mazur, Roxie van Lieshout and Leyla Kragten-Tabatabaie.

4. RSV DYNAMICS DURING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC
March 25th, 2021

This webinar is focused on the spatiotemporal variation in epidemic timing of respiratory infections in relation to the COVID-19 pandemic. Through interactive discussion and interview with guest speaker, Dan Weinberger PhD, and co-host, dr. Renato Stein, participants could ask questions directly to the speaker and they can take back lessons learned from these findings to their own research.

Why does RSV exposure in one individual lead to disease, while another individual does not experience symptoms at all? This webinar with guest speaker, prof. dr. Peter Openshaw and co-host, prof. dr. Linde Meyaard, focused on the mucosal neutrophil activation as a new factor involved in RSV susceptibility and protection.

Hosted by Prof. dr. Louis Bont and moderated and organized by: Amber Dassen, Sophie Mazur and Leyla Kragten-Tabatabaie.

2. Lessons learned from the novavax phase 3 maternal vaccination trial
NovEMBER 20th, 2020

This webinar is focused on the outcomes of the Novavax phase 3 maternal vaccination trial examining the differential effect of vaccine efficacy in HICs versus LMICs. Through interactive discussion and interview with guest speaker, prof. Shabir Madhi, and co-host, dr. Jessie Groothuis, participants were able to ask questions directly to the speaker and expand on the lessons learned from this trial in their own research.

Hosted by Prof. dr. Louis Bont and moderated and organized by: Amber Dassen, Sophie Mazur and Leyla Kragten-Tabatabaie.
